EF English First English in Action: Charity Quest in the Peter and Paul Fortress

Dear EF student!

We are inviting you to take part in the new format of EF City Stories Life Club - charity event. This time it’s a quest, and it’s an exciting way to spend time and contribute to the important and kind mission. This event is aimed at raising money for the laboratory of the Clinical Institute of Children's Oncology, Hematology and Transplantology in Honour of R. Gorbacheva. It’s a unique medical center, and people from all over Russia come here to get treatment. The Institute performs more than 500 bone marrow transplantations per year. Quest fee (donation): you can donate ANY sum of money. Recomended minimal donation: 300 rub

This fundraising is transparent - you will be able to see how much money is raised during this event. Then, NGO Advita will post a report on their website, so we will all know that money has reached the beneficiary. We will post this report in our social networks as well.

Charity quest:

We will explore the history of the Fortress, the Trubezkoy Bastion Prison, the Peter and Paul Cathedral, and other places and stories of the island. At the end of the Quest we will meet on the beach to discuss the results and have a small picnic. You need: a rug or a blanket, and some snacks to share (fruit, cookies, sweets will do)

How the story of the Peter and Paul Fortress began:
In 1702 Peter the Great visited Solovetsky Monastery. There, on a big Zayatsky Island, local elderly monk taught the tsar to see his fate. In a year, observing conquered lands in the Neva River mouth, Peter the Great noticed an island which he thought was convenient for building a fortress on. By accident, the island's name was Zajchy…

Here, on the cathedral's walls one can see symbols of Order of Knights Templars and in bastions and fortifications one still find forgotten undeground tunnels. The towers and fortress walls are located in a shape of pentagram - a symbol of magic powers. Paul I gravestone is believed to be sacred and miraculous. People pray for success in love life and career in front of it.
